After heading out of Pacific City we made our way down the coast to South Beach State Park where we met up with Sean's friend Ian at the Rogue Brewery.  He was heading down to Yreka to start a new job for the summer, but decided to hit the coast for a few days to surf.  We met him at the Ro brewery and then headed back to the campground where we had an early night and the woke up at 6am the next morning to hit the waves.  That water was so cold and none of us survived more than 30 minutes.  We hit the warm showers REAL quick.

After taking off from Newport we made our way down to the Umpqua State Park where we again met up with Ian.  We spent an awesome night there and had fun some neighbors enjoying themselves as a family.  We were pretty beat so we headed to bed and woke up early again to get a jump start on the day.

The next morning we woke up and had the intentions of making it to Port Orford.  We got about ten miles north of there then set up camp at Cape Blanco State Park.  It was our favorite campground so far.  The beach was gorgeous and we spent some time there before again taking advantage of unlimited free showers.  We then headed out for our longest day yet.  We rode nearly 100 miles and that earned us a rest day that we spent in Crescent City, CA!  This was also our first stop in our final state which is longer than the distance of WA and OR combined.  We spent those nights at The Ranch which is a campground with another name, but we just called it the ranch.

We spent our rest day doing laundry and refueling on some food and rest.  We set up the hammocks in the trees and lounged the day away.  Tavin and I also decided to take a little run to give our legs a change from biking.

The next morning we woke up and broke camp heading south towards the Redwoods!  We  headed south and cruised up the Crescent City hills which we heard were quite the climb.  After our rest day we mobbed up those things with no problems.  After summitting the hills we enjoyed the 4 mile cruise down the other side which brought us to the indian town of  Klamath.  This little town was so run down and ghetto.  We spent some time at the convenience store getting dinner supplies.  During our hour there we became less impressed by the minute.  We booked it outta there and headed for Elk Prairie Campground right in the middle of the Redwoods.  We went hiking and relaxed with a group of people from Canada that were only headed to Eureka.  We hung out with them around the fire and talked for a while before going to bed.  I chose to sleep in the hammock in the woods and it was great until I was awoken by the thunder around 3 am.  Then the rain set in and I had to relocate.  Tavin was a genius and hid under the bear box where he stayed dry and Sean in his tent where he was comfy.  I was out in the elements getting soaked under the picnic table.  I woke up early and told the guys I was heading on into town to find a dryer.  I cruised into Orick and found the only coin operated dryer for miles.  I warmed up and then grabbed some coffee while I waited for them.  We all had breakfast then headed south again towards the wonderful town of Arcata about 40 miles away.

The ride was going great, smooth roads, small hills, and a good pace until about 15 miles outside our destination it happened again............ Trailer snapped in half for the second time. Almost two weeks to the day we got it repaired in the good ol' town of Amanda Park. After assessing the damage and the resources on hand, we rigged the two pieces together using hammock cord and webbing. Thankfully it held the 15 miles and again we got lucky enough to find a welder in the town of Arcata.  We asked around at the skatepark and we got the same answer from everybody.  A muffler shop on south G street.  One guy from the park even hopped in his car and escorted us through town to the shop.  Once we were there we met the owner, Bob.  He was there hard at work under a car and when we came up and told him what was up he was more than willing to help.   He set us up with a repair and also some reinforcement to take some of the weight off of the breaking point.  We had a great time just hanging around the shop and him telling us about his experiences with Tacoma.  After it was all said and done we asked him what we owed him and with a wave of his hand he said nothing just have a great trip.

With the trailer back in working order we headed up to the Arcata co-op to grab some food and get ahold of our warmshowers host Tyler. Shortly after eating we made our way to Tylers house, he lived in a cool little part of town not to far from the University. Him and his roommates told us they were planning on heading down to the Redwood Curtain Brewery to meet up with some friends and asked us to join them. Not being one to turn down a cold beer we showered up and hit the road to enjoy some Humboldt county brew. We ended up in the Redwood Curtain Brewing Company for the night. We met great, inspiring people and drank delicious beverages with the IPA or Trippel being the winners of night. After our night out we went back to Tyler's and crashed for the night. This morning we woke up, drank copious amounts coffee, and went to the CCAT house which was MINDBLOWING to say the least. One of those places you can't explain, but if your in Arcata or passing by its definately a town to check out.   It is the student run garden and so much more.  Then we headed back to their place to cook some breakfest with the veggies we collected at the garden.  This place totally reminds me of Bellingham in so many ways and they even take it to another level.  Then after we eat we are lounging around and do not really know what we are doing I guess.  Heading south for sure!

Pacific City- Great people, Small waves

After leaving Neils house in Seaside Oregon we headed south on some scenic route to the dairy town of Tillamook.  Once there we camed at a little campground right outside of town.  We were very excited to hit the factory bright and early. amd when we got there we were very impressed with the cheese making process. However, we were all very dissapointed by the size of ice cream scoops in the gift shop.  How are they gonna skimp you at the factory where they make the ice cream??

Then we headed west towards the coast on the Three Capes scenic route.  It was a little bit longer, but everybody told us it was much safer and a lot prettier too.  Then we rolled into Pacific City as recommened by Samm in Westport.  He told us stories of nice waves but since getting here it has been completely flat.  We did get a chance though to hike around on the beach and the weather was awesome.  As for our sleeping arrangements we again found another host on Warmshowers.org.   We love having a place to shower, sleep, and just relax without the hassle of camping. Besides, you meet some pretty rad people with unbelievable hospitality. Meeting people has become our favorite part of this trip.

Today we got up and checked the ocean which had sloppy surf so were all up doing our morning ritual of packing, showering, breakfast, coffee, and trying to write something intriguing for people to read. Our sights are set on the beautiful (so we've been told) city of Newport, Oregon where we will meet up with Sean's friend to hopefully get some more wave rippin in. We hope the surf gods grant this request.

Finally In The Big O!

Aloha from Seaside Oregon,
After our longest day in the saddle, about 80 miles, we decided to hunker down in the woods about 15 miles north of the Oregon border. We camped next to a quiet little creek where we all enjoyed a cold but refreshing dip. The night ended with some veggie sandwiches and a can of baked beans. Now thats livin!

Sunday, we packed up our things and headed into Oregon over the dreaded Astoria bridge, which instead turned out to be a pleasant surprise. They are currently in the middle of a three year project renovating the Astoria bridge so traffic was restricted to one lane of traffic at each end. We pulled in behind a line of cars and had the entire bridge to ourselves for most of the 7km, until the climb up the other side into Oregon. Riding against two lanes of traffic and in between bridge construction up a steep incline can be difficult. After working our way through that mess we were in Astoria, Oregon.  We quickly cruised through there as were were in a hurry to get to Seaside.  Once getting to Seaside we realized that Tavin had been pulling the trailer for who knows how long with a flat tire.  I told him it looked a little flat and he said that makes sense it seemed a little harder.  We pulled into a local bike shop and decided that the stock tires had to go in favor a a smoother rolling FREAKY X tire made by Redline.  The difference is huge, and is pulled much easier.

We then headed out to search for a place to stay and stopped by the local surf shop, Cleanline (http://www.cleanlinesurf.com/).  While there we checked out some of Patagonia's gear and also Lib Techs new surfboards and they are CRAZY (and earth friendly too)!!! (http://www.libtechwaterboarding.com/waterboards/).  That will be one of my next buys for sure.   With no real leads in finding a campsite we headed down a dead end road and when the county road ended, so did our hope of finding a place to stay out in the wild.  We felt a little stuck and as a last resort Sean created a profile on WarmShowers.com and within 2 minutes we contacted a man named Neil who lives here in Seaside and said 'Come on over boys.'  This man is truly one of the kindest and trusting people we have met on the trip.  He provided us with the option of coming and going and staying as long as we please.  He also gave us a chance to do our laundry, take a shower, and sleep in some beds.  Neil is the man, and as we huddled in his kitchen last night over pizza and beer he shared with us some amazing stories of  his trips to over 60 countries.

After waking up this morning and having a quick conversation with Neil he showed us where the keys were and said he was headed to Astoria for breakfast with a friend. He left three twenty something year old kids that he met the night before through a phone call hang around his house when he is not even here.  When do you meet people like that? Never, and we feel very thankful to have connected with him.

Right now were slowly packing up our things, taking hot showers, and drinking coffee so we can hopefully get to Tillamook today. We can't wait to get down on some ice cream and cheese curds straight from the source. Until next time.

Astoria or Bust

Last night we made it to Westport after having a relaxing night at the Flemmings house in Ocean Shores. It felt good to finally see the boards come off of the trailer and get some action for once. When we got done playing in the waves we were trying to figure out where we were gonna crash for the night when a local guy named Samm commented on our trailer which led to him inviting us to stay in his backyard. Samm was a cool guy he took us around to various places in Westport and gave us some inside knowledge about some cool surfing spots. This morning we left Westport with plans of riding about 80 miles to Astoria! After about 3 hours of riding we decided to stop in Raymond for some lunch which is where we met our first other group of riders Sarah and Jacques who are on their way to Argentina where they plan to catch a plane South Africa and continue their travels. The open road is a interesting place to be you never know who you will run into or what each day will bring. But I have to say it is great to meet people that I never would have met otherwise.

We will do our best to keep you updated over the next couple weeks of our trip, we should be able to keep things updated more often now that we have made it out of the desolate parts of Northern Washington.

Later on,
Sean W

Amanda Park

On day two we were heading as far as possible in order to reach Ocean Shores by the fourth.  We ended up only makings it about 40 miles leaving us somewhere in the Quinault Indian Reservation.  We pulled off the road into some woods and hung the hammocks up for a damp night.

The next morning we started our fourth of July by attempting to ride the rest of the way to OS.  About twenty miles into our day arouynd the Amanda Park area our trailer snapped while going up a hill.  We knew this day wouls come, but we were hoping not on day three.  We turned around and headed down the hill to ask for a welder and after a bit of searching ran into a man named Steven.  He took us under his wing and helped us fix our trailer, camp on his land, bought us beer, made us spaghetti and let us spend the fourth with himself and neighbors.  They put on one hell of a fireworks show, and they were really hyped on it.

Today is July fifth and we WILL make it Ocean Shores but we really dont know.  We will see how it goes.  It is a very nice day with the sun shining and warm temperatures.  Lets get it!!!

Day 2

Woke up this morning under a picnic table at the bear creek campground 15 miles outside of forks. Yesterday we had a few problem to work through with the trailer and we also forgot a few things as well. Sean forgot His bike shoes and tent and I forgot a rain jacket. Luckily I picked one up before leaving port Angeles and Sean's parents road tripped out here to get him what he needed. Today we are at the hungry bear cafe eating breakfast. The plan is to ride at least to kalaloch . We hope to be in ocean shores for the fourth tomorrow which is about 126 miles.

It has also been raining since we started but that's all good cause we are geared out! The forecast shows a sunny week ahead of us. We just wanna get to the beach and shred some waves!!!!!

Better Late Than Never

Soooooo, because of my procrastination with the trailer aspect of this trip our official start date is July 2. It was a disappointment to push it back a day but we feel very confident in what we ended up with and think that we have a solid trip planned. HUGE thanks to Dylon and his dad, Jason, for being the brain and brawn for this trailer building experience. Here's a look at what we created. Enjoy.
Simply stoked,
T
